Sara Osebold: Back to Earth

Pat of ground. Meditational prayer. Allegiance to the terra firma.
Back to Earth is a series of clay drawings begun at the brink of the pandemic lockdown in March 2020 and continuing into the present. They came out of a need for steadiness, consistency, and healing in our time of both civil unrest and the uncertainty of this Covid period. All of these intimate, hand-held drawings are made while sitting on the ground. I have a personal connection to working this way as I feel immediate stability at this low level and my body trusts the gravitational pull. This process of creating is a way for me to feel safe and grounded and I hope the resulting work demonstrates this sensibility.
Swath of humus. Marker to the underground. Dressing the wound.
The drawings are made with terracotta clay, graphite and mica flecks on Nepal paper. The paper’s cloth-like texture allows me to etch into the surface like a copper plate or embroider marks that scratch or dig into the rag. They become objects on a two-dimensional surface. Through this process I am able to give my full attention as I tend to each one—an act of paying homage to the ground.
