Dominic Terlizzi: Head Fake
Invernadero is pleased to present Head Fake, a solo exhibition of paintings by Dominic Terlizzi that upturns the notion of portraiture as a fixed image. The exhibition is on view by November 9 through December 9.
Terlizzi encourages the viewer to continually re-adjust their focus on and off images of faces through the accumulation and arrangement of disparate parts. Images are embedded into larger pictorial fields using a lexicon of objects that emphasize subtext. Through close inspection there is constant redirection through compositional maneuvers. The paintings’ mosaic surfaces offer multiple paths towards sensation, association, and narration. Locked into these compositions are seashells, leaves, crackers, locusts, pills, doilies, bandages, towels, and snowflakes, providing a surplus of information by way of objects and textures. Repetition and scale shifts transform the portrait into a figure, into a landscape, into a still life.
Concurrent to the show is the release of Turn Up the Subtitles, a drawing zine that utilizes Terlizzi’s distinctive stamp drawing technique. This zine is filled with images that reflect the complex surfaces of his paintings, while maintaining their own stylistic logic. The grayscale paintings were made in response to the drawings, creating a line of conversation between the works through ascending and descending tonal scales.
Dominic Terlizzi currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Recent exhibitions include See Someone Say Someone at One River Hartsdale, NY; Preserving a Find at Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia, PA; A Minimal Relief at NEVVEN Gallery Gothenburg, Sweden; and, A Spirit Knows A Shadow Shows at Craig Krull Gallery Santa Monica, CA. His work has also been exhibited in Baltimore, NYC, Washington DC, Delaware, London, and Mars. He has completed three public sculptures for the City of Baltimore, produced in collaboration with the communities in which they were made. His awards include the Maryland Artist Equity Grant, Hoffberger School of Painting Award, Triangle Workshop Fellowship, a Rema Hort Mann Foundation Nomination, and grants from PNC Transformative Art Project, Spruce Up and the Belle Foundation. In addition to his studio practice, Terlizzi founded St. Charles Projects, based in Baltimore, MD where he has curated over 20 exhibitions. His academic career includes international lectures in the Philippines, South Korea, China. He received an MFA from the Hoffberger School of Painting MICA 2008 and a BFA from The Cooper Union NYC 2003. He has taught at MICA, University of Tennessee Knoxville, and Towson University. He is currently the Academic Director of P.I. Art Center NYC.
